Creating My Own Opportunity

A quiet moment that changed my future

There are moments in life that divide everything into before and after.

For me, it wasn't a grand achievement or a dramatic breakthrough.

It was a question.

One I never expected to ask.

After losing my job at sixty, I remember sitting quietly in my living room, trying to work out what came next.

I'd worked hard all my life.

I'd built a career.

I'd always believed that if you were willing to work, another opportunity would come along.

But this time felt different.

As I sat there thinking about applying for another job, the words came out before I had time to stop them.

"Who's going to hire a 60-year-old?"

The room was silent.

I can still remember that silence.

Not because I expected someone to answer me.

But because, for the first time, I heard what I truly believed.

I believed someone else had to choose me.

Someone else had to decide whether I still had value.

Someone else held the key to my future.

Then another thought came.

It wasn't loud.

It wasn't dramatic.

It was simply clear.

If no one was going to give me an opportunity...

...I was going to have to create one.

That single thought changed everything.

Within minutes I was sitting at my computer searching for online opportunities.

I didn't really know what I was looking for.

I just knew I couldn't keep waiting for someone else to decide what my future would be.

One of the first websites I found was LaunchYou.

To be honest, I wasn't sure it was the right fit for me.

I'd never done anything like this before, and I was naturally cautious.

So I kept looking.

Another company caught my attention, and I entered my details.

Within a minute, my phone rang.

I remember thinking, "That was quick."

As the conversation continued, something didn't feel right.

It felt rushed.

Pressured.

Something inside me said,

"This isn't it."

So, I went back to LaunchYou.

This time I slowed down.

I listened.

I read.

I paid attention to how they spoke about people.

The more I learned, the more I realized they were operating from a place of honesty, integrity and genuine care.

Those were values that mattered deeply to me.

Looking back now, I can see that choosing LaunchYou wasn't really the turning point.

The turning point had already happened.

It happened the moment I stopped asking who was going to give me an opportunity...

and started believing I could create one.

That decision didn't solve every problem overnight.

There were still things to learn.

Plenty of moments of doubt.

Days when I wondered whether I'd made the right choice.

But something inside me had changed.

I was no longer waiting for permission to begin again.

Looking back now, I realise I wasn't really searching for an opportunity that afternoon.

I was searching for hope.

I just didn't know it yet.

Sometimes we don't realise the turning point while we're living it.

Only later do we look back and realise that one quiet decision changed the direction of everything that followed.

Sometimes all it takes...

is one quiet moment,

one honest question,

and one brave decision

to begin again.

A thought to take with you

Is there something in your life where you've been waiting for someone else to give you an opportunity—or permission—to begin?

What might you create for yourself instead?
